Comments are Broken

May 28th, 2009 HNIC No comments

I can bet money that I know why and it has to do with the non-standard, yet surprisingly un-supported, way that my host implements WordPress.  Specifically how they don’t give me full access to my DB which caused errors in the upgrade.  Anyway, I will likely just archive this instance of Kranky (Kranky Klassix!) and start over tonight.

Oy vey.

Southern Living

You know what’s awesome about living in the south? It rains for six straight weeks, then the sun comes out and turns all that water to steam.

It’s like trying to breathe a wet towel.

The Perfect BMX Car: Vauxhall Insignia VXR/Opel Insignia OPC Sports Tourer

May 25th, 2009 HNIC No comments

This car has made it to this space a couple of times before, and now they’ve gone and made a hotted up VXR/OPC version of it (Vauxhall’s VXR is for Britain, Opel’s OPC is for the rest of Europe.  The cars are identical save the badge).

Aimed squarely at the Audi S4 (although it appears a little bigger, closer to A6 size) this may have made it over as the Saturn Aura Redline, but it’s hard to say.  Unlike Pontiac, which is just getting killed off, Saturn is entertaining buyers, and as one of GM’s few somewhat profitable divisions, is getting offers.  Similarly, GM is talking of getting rid of Opel and a couple of companies, most recently long term Chrysler parts supplier Magna, have displayer interest.  If the Magna deals happen, this could still make it over as the Saturn Aura Redline.

Even without that, GM is planning on using Buick to sell its European cars through once Saturn is gone.  Lacross Estate GNX?  It’s possible (but improbable).  Either way, 325 HP, nice styling (if a bit boy racerish in the front) space enough for a bike or two in the rear and all wheel drive?  Brought over as a Saturn this would have to top out in the mid-30s, as a Buick, probably still below 40 to keep from cannibalizing the Caddy CTS wagon’s sales.  As a consumer I’d have preferred it as a Saturn, but either way, I want it.  This might be the Magnum replacement I’ve been looking for.

Of course, for people who hate wagons there’s this:

Had to Make Some Changes…

May 25th, 2009 HNIC No comments

Much to Sean’s pleasure, I’ve removed the nav frame and put all the links to the right in the blog(s), you should be able to get everywhere, but you won’t necessarily be able to get back without using your back button (yeah, I’ll take care of that when I feel like it).  The theme is new, looks kinda sorta like the old one, but different.  I like it.  There’s now a trendy tag cloud, ‘cos I’m hip like that.  Everything else is pretty much the same.  Enjoy.

Back

May 25th, 2009 HNIC No comments

You may have noticed a distinct lack of site updates lately.  That mostly has to do with the fact that about two weeks ago I became unable to make updates to my own site and when I asked my hosting company why this was their response was “we don’t know, sucks for you.”  Anyway, in spite of them (and in spite of the fact that I spent the $$$ I was going to use to move this place last month on a new lens and radio triggers.  Come on, that stuff’s more fun, cut me some slack) I’m back after upgrading my “non-standard” WordPress build to the latest stable version.  I even can post videos again.

More regular posting will resume now.

Poverty Wizard

May 17th, 2009 HNIC 2 comments

Jason Williams loves Pocket Wizards.  No, no, really, ask him.  If it was legal to marry Pocket Wizards in GA, I think Robin would have to be concerned.  But it’s not, so she’s good.  The problem with Pocket Wizards (which, since I haven’t told you what they are, are radio controlled remote flash triggers) is that they tend to be really spendy, about $350 for a pair of the “cheap” ones.  Their main competition, Radio Poppers, don’t tend to be any cheaper.  So, what’s a guy who’s spent the last couple of weeks checking out Joe McNally’s ode to off camera flash to do?

Why, he orders a set of Cactus v4 radio flash triggers.  Commonly known as “eBay triggers” or “Poverty Wizards” they cost about 1/10 Pocket Wizards but, apparently, work about 75% as well (maybe, apparently inconsistent build quality with the v2s meant that you could get some that worked exactly as well or some that barely work at all). For $30 I figured the worst that could happen is that I’d waste $30.  They should be here in a couple of weeks.  We’ll see if off camera flash ends up being something I can pull off.  If nothing else, I didn’t waste money on the TTL Pocket Wizards (which, unlike the originals, all apparently trash) or Canon’s ridiculous IR/line of sight system.
